It’s always been a pleasure for the team at AGM Stone to work on historic buildings, and one recent project we enjoyed was the renovation of a beautiful old church in Dundee. The building itself dates back to the 1870s, and for 150 years it has served as an iconic and popular focal point for the local community. As is often the case, of course, over that period of time the property took a significant amount of damage from the elements.
We were appointed by Alpha Projects of Dundee to undertake specialist repairs to the church’s exterior limework, a delicate operation that required skill and knowhow. This is a Grade B listed building, so care was taken throughout. Within the stone joints, there was a great deal of cementitious mortar that required removal, and where necessary a breathable lime mortar was used as a replacement. This mortar has a heightened vapour permeability, allowing water to pass through as either a gas or a liquid. In previous years, a build-up of moisture will have been a factor in the deteriorating integrity of the overall structure.
Here at AGM Stone, we’re proud to have used our talents to help restore an important community asset back to its impressive former glory. Local churches continue to provide regular religious services, of course, but in this particular case the church also offers support for those with mental health issues and drug problems, and provides a vital café facility, offering hot meals and drinks to those who need them most.
